Madhya Pradesh is known world over for Ujjain, one of the four places in India, where the sacred Kumbh Fair takes place once in twelve years. Another pilgrimage site is Omkareshwar, where Narmada and Kaveri rivers unite. The place is famous for the Shiva temple, which consists of one of the 12 Jyotirlingas. The Khajuraho Temples are a befitting jewel of the state, known for the intricate erotic carvings on the temple walls, that date back to 950 AD. Other carvings of the temple include people doing daily chores in one row and images of the worshiped deities in the other. The caves of Madhya Pradesh are famous all over India. The Bhimbedka caves are named among the UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The ancient caves are an amazing example of rock carvings and transfer you to the past, when the skills of the artisans was truly unbelievable. The five caves of Bagh, near the city of Mandu, carefully preserve the prehistoric treasures. The Bhartrihari Caves placed near the Shipra river and the Udaigiri Caves, a signature of the Gupta architecture and the Pandav Caves, that have mythological relevance from the era of Mahabharata promulgates the Indian culture to leaps and bounds.
The historic forts and monuments of the state include the majestic fort of Gwalior, which has seen the happenings in Madha Pradesh since the 15th Century. It was erected by Rajput King Man Singh Tomar and it was crowned with the title of 'the pearl among the fortresses' by Mughal Emperor Babur. The fort's premises house many temples and palace. The gigantic gates of the fort gave way to massive processions that used to involve elephants, horses and huge flags.
